CELPIP Reading Task 1: Reading Correspondence
Reading
correspondence is one of the four components of the CELPIP reading test and
consists of two tasks:
·
The
first task requires you to read a text (a letter or an email) and to answer six
questions about the text.
· The second task involves reading a short reply from the recipient of the original letter/email. The content of the letter/email has five blanks, and your task is to fill in the blanks by selecting the correct word/s from the given choices.
The
letter/email can be about any subject that people would normally discuss in a
typical conversation. This reading task takes about 11 minutes and measures how
well you can understand what you read in personal, social, and workplace
contexts.
Ultimate Tips for CELPIP Reading Task 1
As a CELPIP
test taker, it is vital that you look for reading tips and strategies that can
help boost your CELPIP preparation and ace this
reading task. To help you achieve this, check out these ultimate tips for
CELPIP reading task 1!
·
Strengthen your speed-reading skills.
There are two
speed-reading skills that you must develop to ace this reading task: skimming
and scanning abilities. These speed-reading skills require you to read the text
quickly and to look for information and supporting details that can help you
understand the main idea of the text. To guide on how to hone these skills, use
a textbook and practice skimming and scanning any text. Write down all the
information that you get including specific details such as names, dates, and
locations. Then, rewrite the text in your own words using all the information
that you have gathered from the text.
·
Learn the process of elimination
The process of
elimination is the act of rejecting each possible answer choice until only one
is left. To do this process effectively, here are possible signs that a
particular option is incorrect:
§
Option
does not respond to the question that is being asked.
§
Options
with words such as always, all, never, and none. The content of an option
should contain one, specific idea that cannot be expressed with these words.
§
Options
that use the same words as the author of the text, but have different meaning
or interpretation.
·
Boost your note-taking skills
Note-taking is
also essential in the CELPIP reading task 1. It will help you keep a record of
all the essential information in the text that you can use when answering the
questions. You can also use various note-taking methods such as the Cornell,
Mapping, Outlining, and Charting to make your notes organized and concise.
Furthermore, you can practice these note-taking methods in your review classes
to hone your CELPIP preparation.
