Are you attending a CELPIP preparation program for the high-stakes exam?
Want to further increase your chances of going over and beyond your score goals?
Know the mistakes you need to avoid in the various sections of the test. Below
are some of the most common errors that CELPIP takers make when preparing for and
taking the listening exam. Make sure you don’t commit any of them.
1. Not anticipating the audio recording
Read
and understand the instructions before the audio recording begins. That way,
you’ll know what information to listen for and what you need to do when the
material ends. Then, anticipate the audio recording. Keep your pen and paper
ready, so you can start taking down notes immediately.
2. Panicking when you can’t understand a part of the recording
You
can only listen to the recording once. So, stay focused. If you can’t
understand a section of the recording, don’t panic and continue listening and
jotting down notes. Do the same if you lose track of the recording. Hone your
listening skills during your CELPIP preparation course.
3. Relying solely on your memory to answer the test
No
matter how sharp your memory is, never rely solely on it for your answers. Think
about it. In most situations, even if give your full attention to a speaker,
you can never recall everything he/she said exactly. So, always take down
notes. Use symbols and abbreviations to increase your writing speed. Hone your
note-taking skills during your CELPIP preparation
program.
4. Not considering the time limit
In
some parts of the listening exam, you have a set amount of time to answer
several questions. It’s up to you how much time you want to spend on each item.
In these sections, don’t hesitate to guess and move on if you’re not sure of
your answer. Return to the question if you still have time to spare later.
Meanwhile,
in other parts of the exam, you have a set amount of time to respond to a
single test item. Once it runs out, you’re automatically given the next
question. In these sections, take your time figuring out the answer.
5. Leaving a test item unanswered
When
all else fails, guess the answer. There’s no deduction or penalty for incorrect
responses in CELPIP exam’s multiple-choice questions. So, never leave a test
item blank. Use the process of elimination to increase your chances of picking
the correct option. Practice this strategy during your CELPIP
preparation course for the best results.
