Speaking is the last of the four communicative abilities evaluated by CELPIP. This article provides a comprehensive summary of its test’s format, contents, and success essentials. Consider them during your CELPIP preparation to supercharge your training experience.

CELPIP Speaking: Format and Coverage

Part 1: Giving Advice
Duration: 2 minutes
Preparation Time: 30 seconds
Recording Time: 90 seconds

Material Description: a passage describing a situation and a prompt to give advice about it
Task Description: You must provide the best possible advice based on your experiences. 

Part 2: Talking about a Personal Experience
Duration: 2 minutes
Preparation Time: 30 seconds

Material Description: a question about your personal experience regarding a specific situation
Task Description: You must provide a comprehensive explanation of your relevant experiences. 

Part 3: Describing a Scene

Task Description: You must describe the scene in great detail to someone who cannot see it.

Part 4: Making Predictions

Part 5: Comparing and Persuading

Task Description: You must pick one of the provided options and explain why it is better compared to the other choice.

Material Description: a passage discussing a complicated situation and two options to choose from
Task Description: You must pick one of the provided options and pattern your response to the complicated situation after it.

Part 7: Expressing Opinions

Material Description: a question about your experience
Task Description: You must draw on your experience and provide your opinions about the provided topic.

Part 8: Describing an Unusual Situation
Duration: 2 minutes

Material Description: a picture depicting an unusual scenario
Task Description: You must describe the scene in great detail.

CELPIP Speaking: Dos and Don’ts

Now that you know how the exam is going to be conducted, you need to make sure you’re ready for it. Below is a list of what you should and shouldn’t do to perform well during the test. Practice them during your CELPIP packages training sessions.
DO
·         Use transition signals to show changes in ideas.
·         Ensure your response has an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
·         Refrain from using informal language.
·         Pace yourself when you deliver your responses.

DON’T
·         Beat around the bush.
·         Be stingy with the details.
·         Use expressions that you are not that familiar with.
·         Take your time answering the questions.
