How to Use the Continuum Scale in Your CELPIP Preparation

The continuum scale is a simple graphic organizer used to show the timeline of events in a story, the order of information in an academic passage, and even the relationship of ideas and concepts in a specific text. In study groups, this graphic organizer is also used to display the critical points of the topics during the discussion. In classroom setups, most instructors used the continuum scale in organizing and presenting lectures to their students. If you’re a test taker enrolled in a CELPIP review center Philippines, read and follow these three simple steps on how to use the continuum scale:

Step 1: Select a topic

This graphic organizer is best for topics that have several critical points and supporting details. In selecting a topic, make sure that it consists of various headings and subheadings, as well as keywords and key phrases.

Step 2: Create your own continuum scale

The continuum scale is made up of a horizontal line with two small vertical lines on both ends and has two sections: low and high. To boost your CELPIP course review preparation even more, below is a sample illustration of the continuum scale:

Step 3: Fill out the continuum scale

There are two simple ways of filling out the continuum scale: listing or ranking method.

         ·         Listing method – Write down all the critical points of the topic that you have easily learned below the high section of the continuum scale. On the other hand, list down all the critical points of the topic that you find difficult to understand below the low section of the continuum scale. Match all the critical points in the high section that are connected to the critical points below the low section.

         ·         Ranking method – Arrange all the critical points of the topic according to their difficulty. Rank them from 1 (easiest) to 10 (hardest.) Write all the critical points according to their rank on the continuum scale. Rank 1 should be below the high section while Rank 10 is under the low section. The ranking method enables you to identify the difficulty of each critical point of the topic.
