CELPIP Note-taking Tips: How to Apply the K-W-L Chart


Note-taking plays a crucial role in boosting critical-thinking and communication skills. If you’re a test taker attending review classes in an affordable CELPIP review program, it is essential to seek different note-taking techniques and strategies that you can apply during class discussions and group study sessions. The K-W-L Chart (Know, Want to Know, Learned)

The K-W-L Chart is a note-taking strategy used to help students organize information during lectures. It can also be used to engage students in a new topic, activate their prior knowledge, and express their opinions about a specific issue. The K-W-L Chart is ideal for listing down critical points during group study sessions and summarizing key information in a given text.

How to Use the K-W-L Chart

Do you want to apply this note-taking device in your CELPIP preparation course program? Read and follow these three simple points:

         ·         Select a text

The K-W-L Chart works best with expository texts such as textbook, news articles, and instruction manuals. In choosing a text, make sure that it contains several main ideas and supporting details.

         ·         Create a K-W-L Chart

The K-W-L Chart consists of three columns such as K (Know about the topic,) W (Want to know about the topic,) and L (Learned about the topic.) Below is a sample illustration of the K-W-L Chart:

          ·         Fill out the K-W-L Chart

In filling out the K-W-L Chart, consider the following points:

§  In the first column, answer the question “What do you know about the topic?” List down at least five responses under the K column.

§  In the second column, answer the question “What do you want to know about the topic?” Write down at least 3–5 responses under the W column.
§  In the third column, answer the question “What have you learned from reading the text?” List down at least ten critical points and supporting details about the text under the L column.
§  Don’t forget to check each column of the K-W-L Chart to make sure that you have written all the essential information about the text.
