Your Guide to CELPIP Writing Success


Writing is the third of the four communicative skills tested by CELPIP. This article provides a run-through of its section’s format, coverage, and various success essentials. Enroll in CELPIP classes to get a more detailed discussion of this component.

CELPIP Writings: Format and Coverage

The CELPIP writing test is divided into two parts. It’s crucial that you know how each one is conducted so you can prepare for them adequately. Below is a summary of each section. Keep them in mind during your CELPIP test preparation period to supercharge your training experience.

Part 1: Writing an Email
Duration: 27 minutes
Number of Questions: 1
Material Description: A short passage discussing the context of the correspondence, the purpose of the email you’re tasked to write, and the information it must contain.
Task Description: You must write an email, containing 150–200 words, in response to the given situation.

Part 2: Responding to Survey Questions
Duration: 26 minutes
Number of Questions: 1
Material Description: A short passage discussing the context of the survey and a list of possible responses.
Task Description: You must select one of the provided options and explain, in 150‑200 words, why you picked that response.

CELPIP Writing: Dos and Don’ts

Now that you know the lowdown on the test’s format and coverage, you need to ensure you’re prepared for them adequately. Practice the following dos and don’ts during your CELPIP test preparation.
DO
·         Ensure your essay addressed all the task points.
·         Double-check if you included all the details required in Task 1.
·         Use a writing style appropriate to the context in Task 1.
·         Include an overview of your letter/essay in its first paragraph.
·         Make sure your letter/essay develops logically.
·         Practice using a computer during your training period.
·         Proofread your final work.

DON’T
·         Compress your answers to a single paragraph.
·         Disregard structure when you write your letter/essay.
·         Stick to a single writing style (formal or informal) for all your writings. 
·         Forget to use transition signals to indicate changes in ideas.
·         Employ simple or unvaried sentence structures.
·         Use more than one space to separate your paragraphs.
·         Include irrelevant information in your letter/essay.
