Are you looking
for a simple study strategy to boost your CELPIP preparation? One of the most
practical learning techniques that you can use to enhance not only your
critical-thinking, but also your communication skills is the Chunking Method.
What Is the Chunking Method?
Chunking refers
to the process of taking individual pieces of information and grouping them
into larger units. By grouping ideas and concepts into chunks, information
becomes easier to retain and recall. According to neuroscientist Daniel Bor,
chunking allows people to take in smaller bits of information and combine them
into more meaningful, and therefore more memorable, wholes. The Chunking Method
is one of the most useful study techniques that most students and CELPIP test
takers apply in their review and group study sessions.
Using the Chunking Method in Your CELPIP Preparation
As a test taker
enrolled in a CELPIP preparation course program,
it is essential to use the Chunking Method to boost your critical-thinking
skills and get a high band score in the CELPIP exam. The following are three simple steps on how
to apply the Chunking Method in your CELPIP training:
1. Read
and examine your CELPIP course training materials
During your
CELPIP review classes, list down all the critical points about the lesson.
Organize them by using a note-taking strategy such as the Cornell, Charting,
Sentence, and Outline Method. Suscribe to our blog to get to know more about
these note-taking strategies!
During your
study time at home, read and examine your notes (including your CELPIP course training materials) by highlighting the most important topics of the lesson.
2. Organize
your notes into chunks
Once you have
identified the most crucial topics about the lesson, use them as your reference
when chunking your notes. Read your notes and locate ideas or concepts related
to each crucial topic. For instance, if the lesson is about the CELPIP test
components, then your four crucial topics will be the Speaking, Writing,
Listening, and Reading sections. Keep in mind that the number of crucial topics
or chunks will depend on the content of your notes.
3. Review
your “chunked” notes
After you have constructed
your notes into chunks, look for any inconsistencies such as misspelled words
or misplaced ideas and revise them properly. For students enrolled in an affordable CELPIP review center, they can also consult
their instructors about their “chunked” notes.
So what are you
waiting for? Organize your notes now and apply the Chunking Method in your
CELPIP preparation. For more study tips, visit the nearest JRooz CELPIP Review
