Performance Standards for the CELPIP-General Writing Test

CELPIP-General Writing Test

As one of the components of the CELPIP General test, the writing section is designed to measure how well you can communicate through writing in an everyday situation. It consists of two writing tasks (Task 1: Writing an Email and Task 2: Responding to Survey Questions) and takes about 60 minutes.

For test takers who want to boost their CELPIP training, it is essential to know the scoring criteria for the writing test. Below are performance standards guidelines for the CELPIP-General Writing test.

Performance Standards for the CELPIP-General Writing Test

The performance standards chart is crafted to help you understand how your writing skills are measured by the CELPIP-trained and -certified raters. The CELPIP raters evaluate your performance in every writing task using the four score categories. Each category contains special factors that the raters consider as they rate your work. To boost your CELPIP preparation exam, read and follow this performance standards chart.

Scoring Categories
Special Factors

       1.    Coherence/Meaning – This category rates how your ideas flow together to form a meaningful and coherent response.

        ·         The ideas are explained clearly.
        ·         The ideas are well-organized and the reader can easily follow the logical flow of information.

        2.    Vocabulary – This scoring category assesses how well you use vocabulary, idioms, and phrases to make your ideas understandable.

         ·         Use a wide range of vocabulary with natural and sophisticated control of the two lexical features: spelling and collocation.
        ·         Proper use of words to express precise meaning.

       3.    Readability – This scoring category weighs how clear and fluent your writing is.

        ·         The response has complexity and variety in every sentence structure.
        ·         Connectors and transitions are used correctly and effectively.

       4.    Task Fulfillment – This scoring category considers how well the content of the response addresses the task requirements.

        ·         The response addresses the task and follows the instructions properly.
        ·         The word count is within the given range (150–200 words for both Writing Tasks).
        ·         The tone of the response is appropriate for the social context of each writing task.

Two CELPIP raters evaluate your work in each writing task individually. Then, the raters combine their assessment into one overall score for your CELPIP-General writing test. Each writing task is worth 50% of your overall writing score.
